Grant's Story about the CD:
For years, I've wanted to record my own professionally produced CD. I was fortunate to be introduced to a brilliant producer named Hal Wright, of Practical Music Services. After much discussion of parameters, costs and goals, Hal took on the project.
When I was young, my mom had several albums (The big black vinyl type?)(remember those?) by an artist named John Gary. While it certainly wasn't the 'cool' music of my peers, I loved singing along with him. The interesting thing about John Gary was that while he recorded nearly 50 albums, he never quite found the popularity of contemporaries like Bobby Darin. The unique thing about him was his phrasing. He was a underwater endurance record holder. While his records had nothing to do with holding his breath, I think his breath control allowed him to hold notes forever.
Two other early influences were Barbara Streisand and Julie Andrews. From all three I learned the importance of being able to understand the lyric of the song, phrasing and note quality.
Later in life as I performed in high school musicals and then professionally, I realized more and more that I loved the music of the Rat Pack era. Then I was influenced by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, and others famous at that time. I knew I wanted to do that kind of music. In fact, when I started my music production company, Unisance Productions (Unisance, LLC) I wanted specifically to record this "American Songbook" music, or record new music of that style.
So after much research and starting with the "playlist" of music I sing anyhow, we finally decided on the 10 songs on this CD. My concept (except for one song) was to create a CD that a couple might put on later in the evening while enjoying a glass of wine and relaxing from a stressful day. The tag line for the CD, "Relax and let the music set the mood" came from that. Hopefully, you'll find the music romantic- that's what I intended. I knew that having longer songs might hurt the abilty to get airplay. But with the exception of Martini In The Morning.com, less and less of this music is seeing airplay. I wanted this to get airplay at your place!
So, the one "non-romantic" song possibly needs explanation. A few years ago, I went to see the Bobby Darin movie "Beyond the Sea" where Kevin Spacey plays Bobby and actually sings the music. Obviously, I LOVED the music. But one song really struck me. "The Curtain Falls" was one of the last songs Bobby sang in Vegas. I just love the words and melody. It's a nice way for me to close my programs when I sing. It helps the artist bring the audience closer and is a very intimate way to say goodbye.
I hope you enjoy the CD. Please stop back and leave comments on it?! I would really appreciate the feedback on this first attempt. And hey, if you get me a gig in Vegas, I'll close with The Curtain Falls!
